I might be exaggerating a little. It could have just been an hour and a half. But, either way, we took our time deciding on the placemats we bought to go on our new dining room table.
I’m sure most of you realized that our “Sue” I posted about earlier this week was a plate. We found it within a few minutes of walking in Crate & Barrel, and we immediately knew we had to have them. So, we grabbed a chevron salad plate, a white dinner plate (one from the same line we have already), and several different placemats, and headed upstairs where they just so happen to have a display of our table.
We originally went into the store with the intent of grabbing their silver, alligator-print placemats, because we loved the texture and the color was perfect, but once we placed one on the table we knew immediately that we didn’t like it.
Once we started playing around with some other options, we knew it was going to be a tough decision.
We started off with the plum placemat and a salad plate. Please excuse the iPhone photos – it was all we had.
It was (obviously) much more purple and a lot less black in person, but we loved how this placemat picked up on the purple in the plates.
Next up, yellow.
We both loved the yellow (as we always do), but the particular shade felt a bit country to me.
We also grabbed a gorgeous capiz shell one.
We loved the texture and the shade of it, but we hated that it was square instead of rectangle – the whole point is to protect the table, but we didn’t feel like this one covered enough of the table to really be able to do much.
And finally, gray.
We liked them all, but we felt like we weren’t thrilled with the whole picture. We realized it was because it was still lacking in color, so we ran back downstairs and grabbed a matching chevron charger to try out.
After much debate, we settled on the gray placemat. We both really loved the purple one as well, but we have plans for bringing in color in other ways, so we decided that keeping the placemats neutral would be our best bet.
Once we got home, we eagerly plopped everything on the table, anxious to see how it all came together.
I’d like you to observe the difference between the above photo and the one right before it.
Notice how the placemat is decidedly less gray in our actual home. In fact, it looks very tan. We’re a bit disappointed with the color, and we don’t think we’re going to be keeping the placemats – we found some white ones that we like at Z Gallerie, so we have plans to go check those out later this week and see if we like them better.
But, until then, we’re pretty thrilled with how the plates bring some more color to the room.
Have you ever liked something in the store, only to bring it home and realize the color doesn’t work at all in your home?
