HOW TO PAINT A CEILING

Whether you want to add a fun color or you just need to refresh the existing paint, painting a ceiling can make a huge difference in your space.

Painted Ceilings

Prep Work

You'll want to start by patching any holes, removing what you can from the ceiling (like vent covers), and covering up furniture and the flooring.

Cutting In

Tape around the edges of the ceiling using painter's tape, then use an angled brush to cut in all around the room. A steady hand is key!

Rolling

Next, use an extension pole to help you roll the rest of the space. Work in 5' square sections and try to always keep a wet edge.

Second Coat

Allow the first coat to fully dry before adding a second. You'll generally need two coats, especially when painting a bold color.

A Note on Primer

If you're covering stains or a darker color, you'll have the best results if you prime the ceiling first. Otherwise, a paint + primer combo is fine.
