How to Build + Install Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are a really beautiful and unique addition to any space in your home. They're great for displaying plants, books, and more! Here's a look at how to build and install them.

– 1×12 pine boards (for top and bottom of shelves) – 1×4 pine boards (for front and sides of shelves) – 2×4 common boards (for ledger board & supports) Painter’s tape Wood glue Wood filler – Wood stain Sealer Heavy duty screws

For each shelf, you'll need:  – (2) 1×12 boards at desired shelf length  – (1) 1×4 board at desired shelf length – Two 1×4 boards cut to 11 1/4"

Cut + prep boards

Optional note:

For a more seamless look, use a table saw to miter the edges of any sides of your boards that will meet each other!

Line up all of the pieces of your shelf, then use wood glue to assemble them and painter's tape to hold everything in place.

Assemble shelves

Patch any imperfect seams in your shelves, then thoroughly sand them.

Finally, stain or paint your shelves!

Now, you're ready to hang them! Build brackets with 2x4 wood that will fit inside the shelves. Then, mount them on the wall.
