Adding a Modular Closets System to Jackson’s Room
You might remember that last year, I gave mine and Corey’s closet a huge overhaul. This was one of those bucket list projects for me. I had never had a closet system I really loved before! I had always wanted to have a closet that felt functional and clean all the time, and last year I finally made that happen. Well, one year later we love our closet system so much that I knew we had to also install a system from Modular Closets in Jackson’s room. Because his closet? Let’s just say it was a giant mess. But no more!
He’s lucky enough to have a walk-in closet. But, the shape of it is so awkward that it’s really hard to store anything in it. It’s really small. Small enough that when we added hangers to the rod we could barely close the door! Plus, he doesn’t have a dresser in his room. So that made storing things like underwear, pajamas, and pants difficult. Suffice it to say, this closet has been the bane of my existence for quite some time now.
I reached out to Modular Closets and asked if they’d be interested in working with me again and, thank goodness, they said YES! Over the last year, I’ve raved about Modular Closets to anyone who’ll listen. So, it’s officially your turn to hear me wax poetic about how much I love them. Let’s get into it, shall we?
Creating a Custom Closet Design
The first step is to figure out the best way to organize everything. Thankfully, Modular Closets offers a free consultation with a design pro, along with a free quote for your closet design. It makes the entire process so seamless. I literally emailed her the measurements of the closet and a few general thoughts about what I wanted, and then she sent back the perfect design. Just like that.
We didn’t even have to go back and forth about it (although, you totally can, and should if you need to make adjustments!). I was so impressed that she nailed the design on the first try. I knew Jackson would love the closet.
As we got the system in place, we did end up making a couple of small adjustments. We didn’t need the leg extenders that were under the drawer unit because it made things too tall for Jackson to comfortably reach. And, I installed a few things a bit lower than directed for the same reason. But other than that? I installed it exactly as recommended and the result is incredible.
Is It Hard to Install a Modular Closets System?
Here’s where I really love to rave about this system – it is genuinely so easy to build and install closet systems from Modular Closets. I’ve done it twice now and both times I’ve been absolutely blown away by how simple they make it. Each system comes with a big ol’ book with aaaaall the assembly instructions. You just find the one you need, grab all the parts, and go to town. If you’ve ever assembled IKEA furniture, this is the same basic idea. But, to be honest, I find this much easier and more intuitive than even that!
I got all of the pieces of the closet system assembled before lunch one day. That’s how quick it was! Installation was a little trickier in this closet than it was in mine – it’s so much smaller! I found it kind of difficult to maneuver everything, especially for the heavier pieces where I needed a hand from Corey. Two bodies don’t really fit well in that tiny closet! But, other than that, it was a super straightforward process. All you have to do to install each section of the closet is find the studs in the wall and mark where they’ll hit the support pieces of the closet system. Then, pre-drill a hole and screw them into the studs. That’s it!
Jackson’s Finished Closet System
I worked on this over the course of two days while the kids were in school, and I am so happy with how it turned out. Let me walk you through some of the thought process for the design:
- My number one requirement was that we’d add some drawers, and I wanted them to be near the closet door. We can’t really hang anything on a rod here because the hangers end up bumping the door when it closes. So, drawers + shelves were the perfect solution!
- I wanted a good amount of hanging space, but I didn’t want it to take over the whole closet. So, we went with a two-tier hanging system next to the drawers, plus another in the back of the closet. It should be more than enough room for all of his clothes. Plus, I personally love having the smaller hanging sections in my closet. It allows me to keep things way more organized than one long rod!
- And finally, having a built-in laundry hamper was a MUST. His dirty laundry never made it to the basket before because he would toss it into the closet and hope it hit the right spot. It never did. This way, he has to actually take some effort to get the clothes into the hamper! I think it’ll hopefully solve the issue of dirty clothes all over his closet floor. But, of course, we’ll see.
I love that a closet system like this can take a closet and completely change the functionality of it without adding a single square inch. I feel like we can fit twice as much stuff in here now, and it looks half as full as it did before. It’s almost like a magic trick!
What Parts Did I Use?
If you’re interested in putting something like this together, heres a quick list of every part from Modular Closets that I used in here.
On the back wall we have:
And on the other wall, we have:
Of course, I don’t recommend exactly copying this closet unless you have the exact same one in your house. It’s so easy to get a free design created that I highly recommend doing that if you’re looking into this!
It feels so good to finally have his closet a little more functional. I always love a project like this that’s not only great for us now, but also really adds to the value of the house! It feels great to be able to say two of the three bedrooms in our house have fantastic built-in closet systems. I guess Grant’s room needs to be next?!
