10 Things That Happened in May
What a month! I’m pretty sure I’ve learned that May is always wild if you have kids in school. For some reason it seems like everything falls in these last few weeks. It’s complete chaos from beginning to end! It doesn’t help that we added on a last-minute family vacation, plus I had a marathon scheduled at the end of the month. It was a lot, and I feel like it flew by.

In addition to the general chaos, we had a few things happen personally this month that really reminded us how important it is to truly soak up every single second we have together. We watched some people around us lose loved ones far too soon, and heartbreaking doesn’t even begin to cover it. It was a good reminder to us to savor every minute because you don’t know how long you have. So, as we head into summer, we’re focused on family time and living every single day to the fullest!
10 Things That Happened in May
- We did all the school activities! Every May, I feel like I basically live up at the kids’ school. I help run teacher appreciation week for our staff, and there are approximately two dozen other events to help with and plan for. Kindergarten had a themed day every day of the month. They weren’t all dress up days (thank goodness) but we did have to check the schedule every day to be sure! We had book fair and end-of-the-year parties and on and on and on. It’s always such a whirlwind, but it was a blast!
- We had the coziest Mother’s Day weekend. I told Corey I didn’t really care what we did, I just didn’t want to make a single decision about anything. And he delivered! We went out to breakfast, had a cozy day at home, went on a long walk together, and he made the most delicious dinner in the evening. It was so relaxing and wonderful, and just made me so grateful for my sweet boys!
- We WENT TO DISNEY WORLD! It was a super last-minute trip (we booked at the beginning of the month) and it was such a blast. I’m working on a full recap post for later this week, but suffice it to say we had the best time. I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that it took me 35 years to make it there, but now I’ve been 3 times in the last year!
- We had our first few trips to the pool! As soon as the weather starts warming up, the kids begin begging to go to the pool. We started hitting it up in the afternoons before school even got out. It’s been so nice to splash and play in the sun, and I’m really looking forward to an entire summer hanging out there as much as possible.
- Grant finished kindergarten! And Jackson finished fourth grade! Obviously this is a given (it’s summer!), but it’s worth acknowledging. I feel like these are two huge milestones. My youngest is done with kindergarten and my oldest is prepping for his last year of elementary school. How did that even happen?! It was so lovely having them at the same school this year, and we’re really going to be soaking it up next year. It’ll be the last time it ever happens!
- We took a ton of walks. I’ve always been into walking but I feel like I really took things up a notch this month. The kids and I always go on “Disney training walks” when we’re prepping for a trip, to get them used to longer walks without complaining. So, we did those all month long and it was just so sweet to chat and giggle with them. I also started incorporating short 10-15 minute walks around the block into my day this month. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and a little reset midday! I hope I keep it up all summer, because I’ve really been enjoying it. Plus, it’s a great way to get my steps in!
- I stocked up on art supplies. I always get a little intense in May about making sure I have plenty of arts and craft supplies on hand for the kids to keep them engaged and away from screens during the summer. We found lots of fun stuff this year – here’s a collection of a bunch of the things I love to keep on hand.
- I ran a marathon! It was my third marathon, and I ran it a mere two days before we left for our Disney trip. Maybe not the wisest planning, but it sure was a great reward! Every time I run a marathon I swear it’ll be the last one, but I’ve learned to just wait and see how I feel a few months after it’s over. It’s a little like childbirth – eventually, you forget how painful it was and look back on it with fondness!
- We went to our favorite zoo. The kids have been begging for a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo, and since we were in Dallas we made it happen. This is our third summer in a row visiting, and it’s truly the best zoo I’ve been to. If you’re ever in the Dallas area and looking for something to do, it’s a must!
- I did all the summer prep. Just me, or do you also get a tad manic about making sure the summer is going to go smoothly? I always put a ton of effort on the front end of summer into planning out a loose schedule, coming up with things to keep the kids busy, and stocking up on supplies. I’m far from the type of mom who entertains my kids all day, but I do have the luxury of working from home with a flexible schedule! So, I try to make sure to set aside some time each day to do something fun with them. I’ve got a whole lot of (small) adventures planned for June, and I’m really looking forward to getting started!
Top 10 Finds This Month
- I always order Brain Quest books for the kids to do over the summer, so we got those lined up and ready to go! They make them specifically for kids to do in the summer and have books for in-between each grade up to 6th. I really love that it keeps them engaged in some academics over the summer, and they find the books so fun. They work on them a little bit each day, and we celebrate when they reach milestones in them!
- I saw my bestie, Parisa, in these sunglasses and immediately asked for the link. They’re so cute, they’re flattering, and they’re cheap. I’m a sucker for good sunglasses, and these are great!
- I organized our linen closet and am obsessed with this gift bag holder. I’ve never had a good solution for keeping them organized, but this is perfect!
- I also discovered these little plastic boxes and am obsessed. They work really well in our medicine baskets for things like bandaids and cough drops. I moved a ton of small things (even ear drops!) into these boxes and things feel much more organized.
- It’s been years since I used Crest White Strips but I ordered a set after seeing my teeth while sending a Marco Polo to a friend and cringing at how yellow they looked. It’s pretty incredible what a difference they make, and I’m going to try to commit to using them a couple of times a year!
- I ordered this Bogg bag knockoff and am IN LOVE. It was a hot button topic on Instagram all month, and I think a lot of you joined the club. Click here to see all of the accessories I got to keep it extra organized.
- I’ve been looking for a good longline sports bra that doesn’t ride up, isn’t too short, and feels supportive. This one fits the bill perfectly! It’s what I chose to wear for my marathon, so you know it’s good.
- I’m still on my faux outdoor flowers kick, and I ordered a second color of these so I think it’s safe to say they’re my favorite.
- Been wearing these sandals nonstop. They’re supportive and comfy but don’t look like they’d be supportive and comfy, you know?
- And finally, I’m always looking for good bralettes that I can wear under tanks with wide arms or things that are a tad low-cut. These are so cute and just look like a cami. Plus, they’re so comfortable!
