Easy Porch Decoration Idea: A Front Door Basket with Flowers!

Looking for a way to add a little curb appeal and make your front porch feel more special without any effort? I recently added a front door basket with faux flowers to my front door and it might be the most charming front door decoration I’ve ever tried!

I love a wreath at Christmastime, and even during the fall months. But, for the rest of the year, I often have a hard time finding wreaths that I really like. I’m pretty picky about front porch decorations, and it can be tricky to find something that feels right for me. Plus, I’m big on seasonal decor for the front porch, and I hate having to store a bunch of different wreaths so things always feel seasonal!

I’ve been looking for alternatives to wreaths for a while now, and I decided to give the front door basket a shot. I love the look of a charming little basket hanging from the front door full of flowers! It’s just as easy as a wreath to set up, but it’s much easier to swap things out for the season because I already have a bazillion faux flowers! They take up a lot less space in my storage bins than a big ol’ wreath does, and I think it’s such a welcoming and unique look.

I spent a lot of time pouring over photos of various front door basket and flower combinations before I landed on the one I used. I didn’t want all that research to go to waste, so I’m sharing it with you today! If you’re considering a front door basket with faux flowers for your front door, I’ve got you covered.

Choosing the Right Front Door Basket

The thing I spent the longest time on was figuring out what size basket you need to use for your front door. I didn’t want something that felt really small or awkward on the front door. But, I also didn’t want anything too large since we have windows on our door that I didn’t want to cover up! In the end, I went with a basket that’s 12″ tall (not including the handle). I think it’s the perfect size for me, but I also think it would have been fine to go a few inches in either direction.

I think if I was making recommendations for a standard-sized front door, I would say that anything between 8″ and 14″ would work well. Go for a smaller basket if you have windows you don’t want to cover, and a larger basket if you have a solid slab door.

If you’ve got an extra-tall front door, I wouldn’t recommend anything less than 12″ for the basket!

Adding Seasonal Flowers to the Front Door Basket

Once you’ve got the perfect basket picked out, just toss some flowers in! I love how easy it is to swap things out seasonally. If you’re the type to always have fresh-cut flowers around, you can definitely go that route. They just won’t last very long. I always lean into faux for the front porch because I’m awful at outdoor maintenance. For summer, I went with these bright yellow faux flowers. But as we head into fall, I’m already eyeing something like this, or my favorite faux mums.

I tossed a little bit of cardboard in the bottom of my basket to help raise my flowers up and help them stand better. I’ve also seen people use pool noodles cut into short strips and put the stems into the hole in the noodle. I think it’s a genius way to get your faux flowers to stand up!
