Small Patio Makeover Part 2: My New Languid Blue Patio Ceiling
One of my favorite ways to spruce up a dull covered patio is by painting the ceiling blue. See how I gave my small patio a refresh with Sherwin Williams’ Languid Blue!

We’re back and working on my mini office patio again and I’m really excited about how it’s coming together! In our last house, I learned that I really love the look of a haint blue patio ceiling, so I really wanted to do that again here. Not only does it help deter wasps and pests, it looks gorgeous and helps break up all that brown. It’s truly a win all around.
While I was at it, I also replaced the old florescent light with a fresh fan and it’s wild the difference it made. So, let’s break it all down!
Choosing the Perfect Haint Blue
I wrote a whole blog post about how to choose a haint blue ceiling color (and why you should), so check that out if you want a deep dive. But, I’ll talk a bit here about how I chose the color for this ceiling.
I’d love to tell you that I spent days testing colors and comparing options and picking the perfect choice. But, that’s just not how it happened. Instead, I decided on a whim that it was the day to paint and I ran to the store immediately to get paint. When the mood strikes, you’ve got to take advantage! Despite my lack of testing paint, I still ended up with a color I absolutely LOVE, so here are my tips for making that happen:

- Grab a paint swatch that closely resembles the colors already in the space. I compared every blue I was eyeing to a brown swatch to help make sure the undertones all worked together. I eliminated several that looked too green or too gray!
- Once you’ve landed on a color that you think might work, I highly recommend taking a moment to Google the color you’re considering. It’ll show you rooms that have used the color and you can see it in a larger space. I’m always surprised at how different colors look when they’re on a whole room! I also added “exterior” to my search to see this color used outside, and it was helpful!
And, of course, I highly recommend you only try choosing a color without testing if you aren’t feeling super picky. If it’s for a really important space (like a main living space) or one that isn’t easily repainted, you’ll want to test more! See my tips for choosing the perfect paint color here.
I landed on Languid Blue by Sherwin Williams, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Painting the Patio Ceiling
Painting a ceiling is pretty much the same as painting walls, just higher. You can see a full rundown of the best practices here, but it just takes some patience and strong neck and shoulder muscles.
This was a really quick project since it’s such a small space. It took maybe half an hour to knock out each coat.It was such a satisfying, quick transition!

Installing a New Fan
And finally, once the ceiling was painted it was time for a new fan! We used to have a big, ugly florescent light here. But, it never got turned on (we have string lights that are way cozier and plenty of light) so I didn’t need it. Instead, I grabbed a cheap fan on Amazon that doesn’t even have a light. It’s nice and powerful and gives some really great airflow, and I love how sleek it is. It finishes things off really nicely and looks so much better than the old strip light.

I can’t believe how far the patio has come so far with just a couple of projects! I just need to do some accessorizing and then I can call this area finished and I am SO excited. Stay tuned for the reveal!
