How to Make a Gingerbread House Gift Bag
This Gingerbread House Gift Bag is one of my favorite super quick & easy hacks for creating a custom gift bag!

I’m not normally a super crafty person, but there’s something about the holidays that makes me want to make all the things. I get itchy for all sorts of crafts this time of year, and I’m always trying to think of ways to infuse a homemade touch into just about everything I do.
But, of course, I’m not actually very good at a lot of crafts, so I need things to be simple. That’s why I love these DIY gingerbread house gift bags. They’re absolutely adorable and make every gift or treat feel a little more special, but they’re pretty foolproof to make!
I promise you – if I can make these look cute, anyone can.
How to Make a Gingerbread House Gift Bag
You’ll Need…
- Brown Paper Bags (you can use lunch bags or a gift bag!)
- Scissors
- White marker or paint pen
- A little creativity!
Make the House Shape + Draw Roof
Start by cutting off the top two corners of your gift bag. This is optional, but really adds to the “house” feel. Alternatively, you could use your white pen to draw a roof along the top corners so you don’t have to cut.

Draw the outline of your roof and then add your details. I like to do shingles or bricks, but you could add snow or other details too! Remember there’s absolutely no wrong way to do this and it’s almost impossible to mess it up.
If you need inspiration, search for gingerbread house images online and copy some of your favorite designs!
Add Doors + Windows
Now, grab your white paint pen or marker and add your door and windows. Start with just the general shape, but details are what really make it fun here. You can add curtains, windowsills, snow, etc. Curved shapes really add to the whimsy of a gingerbread house, so consider playing around with various window shapes!
Add Remaining Details
Once you’ve got the basics on your gingerbread house gift bag, you can get crazy with the details! Swirls and dots and embellishments are what a gingerbread house is all about, so don’t hold back. You can play around with tons of different styles but, again, I recommend doing a quick search for gingerbread houses to get inspired!

A few ideas for what you can add:
- Swirls
- Dots
- Stripes
- Flourishes
- Flowers
- Hearts
- “Snow”
- Squiggly lines
Truly – the sky’s the limit! Just have fun with it!
