How We Display Our LEGO Sets
If you have a LEGO loving family and are looking for some LEGO display ideas, you’ve come to the right place! Today I’m breaking down how we’ve embraced being a LEGO family and how we display our LEGO sets!
LEGO sets have kind of become a thing in our house. I never thought I’d be a person who had shelves upon shelves in their home dedicated to displaying LEGO sets, but here we are. Over the last couple of years, Corey and I have started to build LEGO sets together, and it has been so much fun. We’re so into it, in fact, that we really started to struggle to come up with where the heck to display all of our LEGO sets!
Last summer, I added a giant wall of shelving to our bonus room, and we quickly dedicated that space to LEGO. Over the course of the last year, we’ve slowly been adding to it and it’s basically a full-blown LEGO room at this point. And, honestly? It brings us all so much joy!
We spend a lot of time around here talking about ways to make your house beautiful, but I also think it’s important to consider the things that may not be traditionally “beautiful” but that bring you joy. And this definitely falls into that category! So, if you’re also a family who has a ton of LEGO sets and bricks, settle in and let’s chat about some LEGO display ideas. Because, something that brings this much joy shouldn’t be hidden in your home.
Our LEGO Display Shelves
We have floor-to-ceiling floating shelves in our bonus room, and they’re about 90% dedicated to our LEGO creations! The last time you saw these shelves here on the blog, they were mostly full of decor – but we’ve slowly been adding LEGO sets to them. And now? Well, it’s a full on LEGO display!
We recently spent some time playing around with the layout of our shelves. We grouped them by category (we have a section for Disney sets, Star Wars Sets, Harry Potter, and Marvel). It might not be feasible in every home, but this is really the perfect solution for large LEGO collections! I love having all of them grouped together like this – it’s such a fun way to fill the shelves!
In addition to the shelves on the wall, we have a small cabinet off to the side that also holds some overflow. We have a few really large sets, and there’s only so much LEGO storage space on the shelves. So, we created a little table display on the cabinet for our Disney sets. We have plans to add a small shelf above this area to hold a few of the overflow sets, but it’s still a work in progress!
Displaying Minifigures
Corey and the kids are really into minifigures, so we have quite a collection. Some of them get displayed with their sets, but it starts to look really cluttered to just have them sitting around on the shelves. So, I grabbed a few frames to create some of the same LEGO minifig displays that I made for the boys. We hung them on the walls near their respective categories. It was the perfect storage solution for the minifigures and really lets them shine!
Displaying LEGO in the Boys’ Rooms
Of course, mine and Corey’s LEGO sets aren’t the only ones in the house. Our kids have a ton of LEGO sets that they’ve created over the years, too. They both have a system in their room that showcases their collections.
Grant has some build-in IKEA bookcases in his room that hold all of his books, a few toys, and his small LEGO collection. He’s still at the age where most of his LEGO sets get played with and subsequently broken. So, he doesn’t need nearly as much actual display space. It’s more important for him to have storage for all of the LEGO bricks. We keep them in the drawers under his bed, and it’s a really good system for us for now.
As for Jackson, he has lots of shelves in his room that are mostly dedicated to displaying LEGO. We’ve added some LEGO base plates to some of the drawers, so he’s able to play with them anytime he wants and create little scenes. He’s much better about keeping them intact, but he still has tons of extra LEGO sets. They’re stored in shallow storage bins under his bed.
My Favorite LEGO Display Method
I think it’s safe to say that the simplest, most space-saving way to display LEGO sets is with bookshelves or wall mounted shelves. They’re versatile and can still be used when and if your kids outgrow having the LEGO displayed. They can store other things like toys, books, and decor, and it’s so fun to have your favorite sets displayed front and center in your space!
My biggest advice when choosing your display solution is to consider the depth of your shelves! Grant’s bookcases are a little narrow to hold some of his larger sets. He has an airplane that hangs over the edge of his bookshelf, and it’s annoying! So, you might need to get creative with some of the larger sets!
Other LEGO Display Ideas
Of course, a bookcase display isn’t a practical solution for everyone. So, what are some other LEGO display ideas that might work for you? I’ve got a few thoughts!
- If you have a space in your home for your kiddo to build LEGO, it can also be a great place to display them. Something like this underbed LEGO table can store both sets and individual pieces. Then, they can create their displays or play sets and easily clean it up when they’re done by just scooting it under the bed!
- Grabbing a bookshelf with glass doors can also be a really great way to display those sets. A glass cabinet will keep small children away from the sets, and it can also help cut down on dust!
- A ton of kids have desks in their room. And, that’s a great place to display a few sets! You can hang a shelf above the desk, display the sets on the desktop, or slide them into a desk shelf, if it has them.
- You can grab a LEGO display case that can display individual sets really nicely. This is perfect if you have one or two really special sets!
- I love these plastic storage bins – any storage solution that can be used for something else down the line is a win for me.
- These wall mounted hooks are perfect for displaying LEGO cars! It’s a really fun and unique way to display them and it’s easy to grab them down for playtime.
Are you feeling inspired yet? Hopefully this gets your creative wheels turning and gives you a few LEGO display ideas for your own space!
