Easy DIY Pumpkin Planters
Looking for how to make some really simple fall pumpkin planters with fake pumpkins? I’ve got you covered with this cute and easy project!
I’m on a roll with the fall projects, y’all, and it’s been a blast. This time around, I was looking for something cute to add to my front porch and I felt like I wanted to give real mums one more shot. If you know me at all, you’ll know that last year I converted to fake mums for the front porch and I haven’t looked back, but there’s just something about picking up a couple of mums at the garden center that makes it feel like fall, you know? So, I decided to make some simple pumpkin planters for the front porch. With real mums.
Don’t worry, as soon as I kill them in a few weeks I’ll swap them out for some of the fake ones. I’ve already accepted fate.
How to Make Simple DIY Pumpkin Planters
A Note: You can absolutely do this with a real pumpkin if you prefer. I wanted to use fake so I can reuse these year after year. But, you can accomplish the exact same thing if you use a real pumpkin with the guts scooped out!
Materials Needed:
- Faux carvable pumpkins (here’s the small one, and the tall one)
- A utility knife
- Spray paint (optional, but I used Hunt Club Green)
- Fall flowers and soil
Cut Top & Paint Pumpkin (Optional)
You’ll start by carving the top of the faux pumpkin off. The ones I used are hollow, so they make for a perfect little pumpkin planter. No extra work needed! Be sure to make the hole large enough to fit your plant in. I might have gotten a little over-zealous with the size of my mums, but thankfully it worked out.
Once you’ve got the top cut off, use a drill to add a few drainage holes to the bottom of the planter. This is an absolute must with any planter, so don’t skip it!
Now, if you’d like, it’s time to paint the planter! I used the same technique that I used with my faux painted pumpkins last month, just with spray paint instead of acrylic paint. I love the look, and I think it really makes these cheap faux pumpkins look a little nicer.
Let your pumpkins dry and then you’re ready to plant!
Plant Your Flowers
At this point, you’ve made a planter! You’re good to go! All that’s left to do is grab your cute fall flowers and plant them in your new pumpkin planters. These would be really cute with faux flowers, too, and if we’re being honest I’ll probably end up with those before the end of the season.
But, these sure are cute for now.
These pumpkin planters would look great both inside and out. I wanted to add them to our front porch to start filling it in for the season (obviously these were taken before I really went all out with my front porch decor), so that’s where I have them. But, I love that now I have these reusable planters that I can use differently from year to year if I want!
