How to Style a Throw Blanket On a Sofa
Looking for ideas on how to style a throw blanket on a sofa? I’ve got you covered today with these super simple tips!
Anyone who has ever entered my home knows that we are big on throw blankets around here. We keep the house pretty chilly, and that means that we are snuggled up with blankets on the couch year-round. One year, Corey even got me one of those ginormous family-sized blankets for Christmas! So, it should come as no surprise that styling a throw blanket on the sofa is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart.
After all, I have to do something with all these blankets in my house!
For a really long time, I didn’t put much thought into how my throw blankets were styled. In fact, I imagine most people don’t. Toss a throw blanket on the sofa. Done, right?!
Well, sure! You can be. But you can also put a little effort into styling the throw blanket on your sofa so that it can actually become a part of the decor. It might surprise you how much of a difference it makes!
Styling a Throw Blanket on a Sofa: Tips & Tricks
So, let’s do a little bit of a deep dive into throw blanket styling. It might seem like a frivolous topic, and that’s because, well, it is! This isn’t going to make or break anything in your home. But, those little details and layers of decor can really add up and make a big difference in how your home feels, so I personally believe it’s worth it to take the time to do it right.
Choose Which Throw Blankets to Display
The first (and maybe most important) tip when it comes to styling your throw blankets is to figure out which ones you’ll display and which ones you’ll tuck away. I think every single house on the planet has a least a couple of throw blankets that aren’t anything pretty to look at, but they’re everyone’s favorite to snuggle. They’re ugly, but they’re soft and cozy!
Those throw blankets are vital to your home. Don’t even think about gettting rid of them! But, maybe you could think about how to stash them away so they aren’t on display all the time.
My personal favorite way to deal with the throw blankets that I don’t want displayed is to toss them in a large basket. This applies not just to the “ugly” throw blankets! This is also great for the thicker, plusher ones that might not look great all folded up. Or maybe, just blanket overflow. I mean, our house has to have a blanket for every single member of the family because we don’t share well. Plus an extra for guests. Lord knows I don’t need 7 throw blankets scattered all over my living room!
If you’re looking for tips on how to store throw blankets to keep them nice and out of sight, I’ve got you covered. This post showcases my favorite throw blanket storage option, along with a bunch of other baskets that might be a good fit for you. So, head over there to solve that problem, then come back when you know what blankets you want to display.
Now, let’s get into the various ways to style a throw blanket on your couch.
On the Arm of Your Couch
First up, a classic. Fold your blanket up into thirds lengthwise, then fold it in half and drape it over the arm of your sofa. It looks casual but intentional, and it makes it easy to use the blanket! You can tuck it behind the throw pillows on that corner of the sofa, or let it spill out from underneath them.
I love this look for a blanket that has some tassels on the end or with a really unique texture. It adds some visual interest to the room, but is still super functional!
The only problem with this particular look in my home is that the blanket will quite literally never stay there. My people grab it instead of reaching for the blankets in our basket, and it’s in disarray 100% of the time. If your family is slightly less feral than mine, this might be a good option for you, though.
Folded Over the Cushions
Another beautiful – but impractical for me – option is to fold the blanket and drape it over the seat cushions. This is another option that would never remain for more than an hour in my house, but if you don’t mind refolding the blanket all the time, it can be beautiful!
I personally think this is one of the least creative options, and I would encourage you to try something a little fresh if you’re wanting to play with styling your throw blankets. But, of course, it’s a classic for a reason. A folded blanket over the couch simple and effective!
Try the Casual Toss
This might be a good option for you if you want your blanket really easy to access but you also know it’ll get used on the regular. However, I’ll warn you – much like “no makeup makeup”, this is a hard look to get right! Actually achieving the look of “oh, I just casually threw this blanket on the couch and it happens to look fantastic” isn’t as easy as it looks.
But, with practice, it can be done. For this look, you’ll want to use a smaller blanket. It’s best if it’s also a lightweight blanket (nothing too bulky!). Toss the blanket over the seat of your couch and arrange it in an “effortless but still polished” way. This can also be done on a chaise or over the back of the couch. When done right, it looks really relaxed and welcoming. Otherwise, it can just look sloppy.
I’ll admit I’ve largely given up on this method – I’m not great at it! I always find myself feeling frustrated with layering things just so. Plus, as soon as someone sits down, they move it and all your hard work goes to waste!
Over the Back of the Sofa
This is my personal favorite way to style a throw blanket. And, let me be clear, when I talk about this method I’m talking about draping the throw blanket behind the seat cushions. Not in front of them! This is a small but important shift! It means the blanket won’t get tugged or moved when people sit on the couch.
I started doing this in our home a few years ago when I noticed that the back of our sofa was this giant expanse of space. It can be seen from most parts of the living space, and it wasn’t anything pretty. I wanted to see if I could make it look a little nicer by adding a throw blanket, and turns out, I could!
I keep a folded throw blanket on the back of both our sofa and the leather chair in our living room. It creates a layered look that really adds a lot of visual interest, and it’s easy for anyone to grab the blanket if they want to use it. I always display my favorite throws to look at here. This is for those beautiful ones that you can’t imagine tucking into a basket!
I swap these blankets out seasonally, too! It’s a great way to really drive home my seasonal decor in a subtle way. It brings me so much joy! I mean, what gives off more Christmas-y vibes than a green and red plaid throw blanket tucked over the back of your sofa? Or a pink and red blanket for Valentine’s Day? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
And there you have it. Some not-quite-life-changing-but-maybe-still-useful tips on how to style a blanket on your sofa. This isn’t going to drastically change anything in your house. But, you should always remember that those tiny details make a big difference in the long run!
