It’s Time for a Change
About five and a half years ago, we moved into the house we thought we’d never buy. Seriously – I spent years swearing up and down that I’d never own a new construction home. I like my houses to be a little ugly and need a little love. But, when you fall in love, you fall in love! And, we fell in love hard with this cute, brand new house in a growing neighborhood.
We have spent the last five years taking this house from builder-basic and turning it into something that feels like us. Something that’s unique and special and not like every other new-construction house on the block.
We love our home. Truly, madly, deeply love it.
But, at the same time, we’ve been feeling a little cramped….for a while. When we purchased our home in November of 2019, Corey worked a regular 9-5 in an office. And then, four months later the world blew up and he hasn’t set foot in an office since. Which means that for five years, we’ve both worked from home without an actual office space.
We’ve tried a lot of things over the years to make it work. We built a desk in our upstairs bonus room, which is where Corey worked for about a year until he quit his accounting job to pursue being a Realtor full-time. We added an office nook in our bedroom last year, anticipating that we’d both use it. But, it never really clicked for Corey and now it’s pretty much just my desk (and I use it every single day with my beloved walking pad!). It works fine, but a desk in the corner of our room isn’t the most restful, efficient, or attractive way to squeeze in some office space.
On top of that, I have to admit that I have the itch. I’m getting antsy for a move, and for the last 18 months or so I’ve found myself spending more and more time browsing houses for sale locally and dreaming about how fun it would be to start from scratch.
Corey and I have always known that this cute little house in a brand new neighborhood wouldn’t be our forever home. We did think we’d be here until Grant finished elementary school (so, another 4 years or so). But, it’s become more and more clear to us in the last 6 months or so that it’s just time. We’re feeling more and more growing pains with running two businesses out of a house without a single office space, we’re itching for a change, and the time just feels right.
So, as of earlier this week, our house is officially on the market. We’re moving, y’all!
If you want the full breakdown of what we’re looking for in a house and what has happened so far in our house-hunting journey, you can watch this YouTube video that breaks it all down. I talk about our must-haves along with telling you a little about the house that got away (already!).
So, what’s next? We honestly have no idea. The housing market in our area is incredibly slow right now, and we’re seeing houses sit on the market for months on end. We aren’t naive enough to think we won’t possibly deal with that as well! And, we have to have our house under contract before we can make an offer on a new one, so that means this whole “we’re moving” thing could end up being a bit anti-climatic.
I hesitated on if I even wanted to talk about it here, because how awkward will it be if I make this big grand announcement, and then 6 months go by and we’re…still…here?
But, I’ve always committed to being real and honest with y’all about what’s going on in our lives, and I never want to present the picture that everything is simple and easy when it isn’t. And, let’s be real, moving is never simple and easy. So, I’m bringing you on the journey. The good, the bad, the hard, the awkward. I’m gonna share it all.
I’m writing this post to you on the first official day that our house is on the market, and we’ve got one showing scheduled for this evening, and an open house planned for this weekend. I keep reminding myself that it’s a sloooooow real estate market right now, but deep down I know our house is something special and anyone would be lucky to have it. We just have to find the right person who sees it too.
