I Painted My Ceiling the Same Color As My Walls!
Whelp, the title really says it all. If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve probably heard me debate this project for years. Way back in 2020, I added picture molding on all of the walls in our bedroom and painted the walls a deep, cozy blue (Ink Black by Behr, to be specific!). I left both the trim and the ceilings white and, over the years, I’ve gone back and forth about whether or not to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.
I’ve seen time and again how this works so well. I did it in both Jackson’s room and in Grant’s room…but I still felt nervous. What if it felt too dark? What if I hated it? Or, what if I immediately wanted to paint it back to white?! Thankfully…that’s not really a problem here.
Why I Painted Our Ceiling the Same Color As Our Walls
Let’s take a second to dive into the why of this project. There are many of you out there who’ve been encouraging me to do this for ages. I also know there are also some of you out there who might be shocked at the thought of an almost-black ceiling in our bedroom. Doesn’t it feel too dark?
The answer is, honestly, not at all! Having a darker ceiling does make the room feel a tad darker than it did before. But, it’s where we sleep. I really don’t mind at all! Let’s get into a few of the benefits of having a ceiling that’s painted the same color as the walls:
- It makes the room feel taller. When the ceiling just blends right into the walls, it naturally tricks your eye into thinking the room is taller than it is. We already have 9′ ceilings in here, and it feels so incredibly spacious with the new ceiling color!
- It can make the room feel bigger! I know it’s counter-intuitive, but having the walls and the ceiling all be the same color can really make the walls essentially disappear. Many people think it will make the rom feel closed-in. But, I find it has the opposite effect. Rather than seeing the harsh line between the walls and ceiling, it just all blends together and creates a feeling of openness.
- It’s unexpected. Listen, I think it’s hugely important to have fun in your home. Having a super dark and cozy bedroom with a painted ceiling isn’t a choice everyone would make. But, it’s a choice I LOVE. I want my home to feel like a reflection of me, so I think it’s important to take a few risks and think outside the box sometimes.
So…What Do We Think?
I’ll admit – I was nervous to start this project. In theory, I knew that painting the ceiling the same color as the walls would be a great idea. But, it take a lot of time and effort to paint the ceiling. I worried that after all that, I wouldn’t end up happy with the finished result.
Thankfully, that’s not the case at all. I’m so incredibly pleased with how it turned out. It kind of feels like a big hug when you walk in the room! When I sent a text to a friend after finishing, she said “in my brain, it’s always been painted”. That’s the biggest compliment I can get on a project! It means I’ve chosen to do something that fits! It really truly just works, and I love everything about it.
So, what’s next? I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be painting the trim and doors, too. Now that this is done, it’s clear to me that that’s the right move. I’m going to take my time on it and live with this a bit, but I’m already dreaming about freshly painted baseboards and maybe some new door handles! I guess you’ll have to stay tuned for the fun!
Hi there. I want to do this myself but unsure what finish to use for the ceiling and walls. Would you mind sharing what you used?
Thanks!
Hi! I used a matte finish for my paint!
