Painting the Bonus Room Ceiling
At this point, I think it’s safe to say I’m addicted to painting ceilings. When we first moved into this house five years ago, I had only ever painted a ceiling once. Since moving into this house? All three of our bedrooms’ ceilings are painted, and now the bonus room ceiling is, too!
Getting the bonus room ceiling painted is a huge step towards finishing this room and it is bringing me so much joy. It took me four entire years to get all of the shiplap done in this room, so reaching this point feels monumental. I’ve always known I was going to paint the ceiling in here to match the walls, and it was 100% the right choice. It instantly made the room feel so cozy and welcoming. It’s the perfect movie room vibe!
Tips for How to Paint a Ceiling
Painting a ceiling is one of those projects that can feel more intimidating than it really is. Sure, it’s slightly backbreaking work and it’s not the most fun project you’ll ever do. But, it’s absolutely worth the effort!
Here are a few tips:
- Be sure to cover the floor, the furniture, and anything you don’t want to possibly get dripped on.
- Choose a high-quality paint brand. You don’t want to be doing a million coats of paint here!
- You can paint with a sprayer or do it by hand. I’ve done both! This time, I went with a paint roller because I didn’t want to deal with the prep work of a sprayer. But, a sprayer is objectively less physical labor, so it’s just a matter of preference.

The Bonus Room Before & After
It’s pretty wild how far this space has come since we first moved in! It was originally a big, blank, fully unorganized space. But, after a loooooot of time and work and effort, it’s now super organized, incredibly cozy, and turning into a really beautiful space.
Here’s a little recap of everything that has happened in here so far:
- You can see the before and the first of the shiplap here.
- I gave the room a “phase one” makeover way back in 2020.
- Then, I added some more shiplap…
- …and a whole wall’s worth of storage
- Finally, I just recently finished up the shiplap
And now, the bonus room ceiling is done too! And I added a rug! It’s feeling SO COZY!
I still have quite a few things left on my to-do list, but the biggest thing is that I want to do a giant gallery wall behind the couch. There’s a vision, and it’ll be quirky and fun and perfect for this space. I also want to get a coffee table, we have a few more shelves to add around the room, and a few other little things.
But first? I’m adding a ceiling fan to this room and I’m really excited about that. Not having one in an upstairs room above a garage is really annoying in Texas, so it’s going to make a huge difference.
Lessons Learned
I think this room is a really great reminder that makeovers don’t have to happen in a weekend. Or a month. Or even all at once! This space has taken me years and it’s not done yet. I’ve worked on tons of spaces between projects in here, and it has continued to evolve basically the whole time we’ve lived here. And there’s nothing wrong with that! Home should evolve over time, and creating a room that really works for your family takes a while.
Also, this room is a good reminder to have some fun with your home. Who would’ve thought I’d have an entire room in my home dedicated to storing and displaying LEGO sets? Certainly not me. But my goodness, I’m sure glad I do.
