4 Easy Ways to Make Over Cheap Faux Pumpkins
Looking for some ideas for how to make your cheap faux pumpkins look better? Today, I’m sharing four really simple (and affordable) ideas!

There isn’t much I love more than a good pumpkin in the fall. I always buy a silly amount of them to sprinkle all over my front porch, and it brings me so much joy to see them every day. But, pumpkins are expensive! And, at the end of the season they just get tossed!
I’ve spent a lot of time hunting for good fake pumpkins, but let’s be honest – they’re really pricey too. My budget for this type of seasonal decor aligns a little more with the Dollar Store, you know?!
Thankfully, I’ve learned some really great ways to make over those (often ugly) cheap faux pumpkins.
Where to Buy Cheap Faux Pumpkins
Not sure where you can find some good fake pumpkins? I’ve always had some luck at the Dollar Store or at Walmart. But, here are a few other favorites:
- Set of 7 light pumpkins
- Set of 46 small pumpkins
- Set of 7 orange pumpkins
- Large 8″ pumpkin
- Set of 10 pumpkins
How to Make Over Cheap Faux Pumpkins
Pumpkin Makeover Idea 1: Spray Paint!

I did this project years ago (like, in 2017!) but it still holds up as one of my favorite seasonal projects of all time. And it’s literally just dollar store pumpkins and some spray paint!
You can see the full tutorial here, but this was one of the easiest projects ever. I think the big takeaway from this project is that a good color scheme is key and that it looks really beautiful if you bunch a ton of them together. I don’t think this would look nearly as nice if it was just one or two pumpkins. This is a rare case of quantity over quality!
Pumpkin Makeover Idea 2: Faux Terra Cotta

I painted these faux terra cotta pumpkins last year and they ended up being my favorite addition to my fall decor! It was a really fun project and it’s so simple. You can just use regular craft paint mixed with some baking soda, and it gives a really high-end look. You can see all of the details here.
This would make a really fun project to do on a craft night with some friends. It doesn’t take much time or effort and the end result is totally worth it.
Pumpkin Makeover Idea 3: Stone Look

This was another project I did last fall and I was so excited to pull them out again. It’s a really easy painting technique that takes a tiny bit of practice but leaves you with a really pretty stone look that makes even the cheapest pumpkins feel super fancy.
Last year I kept these guys inside but this year I have them out on my front porch with my other faux pumpkins, and I’m confident they’ll look great even when I start mixing in the real thing! You can see the full project here.
Pumpkin Makeover Idea 4: Faux Pumpkin Planters

And finally, this is a really cute idea that you can combine with any of these other ideas to make an adorable planter for your front porch. I just hollowed out a cheap faux pumpkin, drilled some drainage holes, and made it a planter!
This year, I’m not using it for real plants – I have my favorite faux mums in it. As you can see, I used the faux stone look painting technique for this one but it would work with literally any painting technique you want to try.
And there you have it – four incredibly easy DIY ideas for your faux pumpkins!
